AP/TS SSC PUBLIC BIOLOGY 2nd CHAPTER IMPORTANT QUESTIONS.

1. What is the role of epiglottis and diaphragm in respiration?

  1. Epiglottis: A flap like muscular valve covers the trachea. It prevents the food from entering the trachea and sends it into oesophagus.
  2. Diaphragm: The lungs themselves can neither draw in air nor push it out. Instead, the chest wall muscles and another flexible flattened muscle called diaphragm helps the lungs in moving air into and out of them.
  3. When the diaphragm is relaxed, it is in the shape of a dome- with the convex side of the dome extending into the chest cavity.
  4. When the diaphragm contracts it flattens out a bit or the dome moves downward. As a result, the volume of the chest cavity is increased, and air enters the lungs.

2. Why does a deep sea driver carry oxygen cylinder on her back?

  1.  We take oxygen from the air which surrounds us.
  2. We cannot breathe in by taking dissolved oxygen in water.
  3. So the deep sea diver carry oxygen cylinder with her for breathing when she goes under the sea.

 3. Distinguish between inspiration and expiration.

A.  Inspiration and Expiration

                  Inspiration

                          Expiration

1. It is also called inhalation and is the first stage of external respiration.

 1. It is also called exhalation and is the second stage of external respiration.

 2. Volume of the chest cavity increases by the relaxation of diaphragm.

2.Volume of the chest cavity decreases by the contraction of diaphragm.

 3. Volume of the lungs increases.

3. volume of the lungs decreases.

4. pressure inside the lungs becomes less, compared to outside of the body.

4. Pressure inside the lungs becomes high, compared to outside of the body.

 5. Air is rushed into the lungs.

5. Air is rushed out the lungs.

4. Write the differences between photosynthesis and respiration.

A. Photosynthesis and Respiration

                    Photosynthesis

                      Respiration

1.Photosynthesis is defined as a photochemical reaction during which carbohydrates are formed from carbon dioxide and water in the chloroplasts of plants in the presence of light.

1.Oxidation of food materials especially glucose, fatty acids and amino acids to water and carbon dioxide is called respiration.

2. Occurs only in plants and some photosynthesis bacteria.

2. Occurs in all living organisms.

 3. It occurs in the chloroplast and is dependent on light.

 3. It takes place in cytoplasm and mitochondria dependent on light.

 4. In this process light energy is fixed.

4. In this process energy is released.

 5. NADP is reduced to NADPH2 using the hydrogen of water molecules.

5. NADH2 is formed from hydrogen of carbohydrates.

6. Converts light energy into bond energy.

 6. Releases chemical or potential energy for several other functions.

7.

7.

5. Plants photosynthesis during daytime and respire during the night. Do you agree to this statement? why? whynot?

  1.  No, I don't agree with the statement that plants photosynthesize during day and respire during night.
  2. The process of respiration takes place throughout the day and night.
  3. No organism can survive without respiration even for a few minutes.
  4. During respiration energy is liberated, which is necessary for all biological processes without which any organism cannot survive and plants are no exception.

AP SSC important questions  Biology- 1st lesson 1.   Explain the structure chloroplast with a neatly labelled diagram. Structure of chloroplast 1) The chloroplast is a membranous structure, consisting of 3 membranes. 2) The intermediary fluid filled portion called as stroma is responsible for enzymatic reactions leading to the synthesis of glucose, which in turn join together to for starch. 3) Typical chloroplasts are disc shaped and are filled with colourless area called stroma. 4) They are covered by two membranes. 5) Stacks of thylakoid membranes are located in the stroma and are connected by stroma lamella. 6) Due to the presence of chlorophyll, chloroplasts are green. 7) The chlorophyll pigment is fat soluble and is located in the lipid part of the thylakoid membrane. 8) Chlorophyll is organized to form the reaction centres called photosystem-1 and photosystem-11. 2.
